It isn't too long, though, before you have more options than you know what to do with (and that's a good thing). And once you've assigned skill points, you always have the option of visiting a 'Soul Patcher' who can help you unlearn a skill to get back those point to reinvest in other places. There is a solid mix of close combat and archery skills as well. Also worth noting is that some skills remain passive, like Parrying and Critical Hit, while others are active and need to be selected in order to use, like Dirty Trick and Break Sword. To expand your options, you'll have to discover people willing to teach you new tricks, who usually charge for said service. There's some combat maneuvers for warrior-types, two schools of magic for would be mages, and some thieving skills for rogues in training. Your starting character begins with a limited number of skills, a smattering of choices spread across the classic fantasy archetypes.

Luckily, you won't have to make any critical decisions early on. Despite receiving this many points, however, choices in what direction to go will have to be made. You earn one or two skill points every time you go up in level, but interestingly, you occasionally get a skill point at about halfway between levels. With 38 skills to choose from, each able to be increased through 10 ranks (and the schools of magic through 15 ranks), where you put your skill points quickly becomes the most important character building decision you make.
